Want to take your new found bird obsession on the road? Enter Henderson, Kentucky.
Henderson is one of the most biodiverse birding hotspots in the state, making it the ultimate budget-friendly, highly-aesthetic weekend getaway. Here is exactly how to execute the perfect Henderson itinerary for the newly minted bird nerd.
Friday: Arrival
3:00 PM – Check-In at John James Audubon State Park

- Location: John James Audubon State Park

4:30 PM – Explore the Audubon Museum & Wilderness Lake Trail
- Audubon Museum: Visit the on-site museum dedicated to John James Audubon, the world-renowned ornithologist and painter who once lived in Henderson. The museum houses an impressive collection of his masterwork, The Birds of America.
- Wilderness Lake Trail: After touring the museum, stretch your legs on this scenic trail. Be sure to look for the iconic bridge featuring painted local bird species.
6:30 PM – Dinner & Wine Tasting at Farmer & Frenchman Winery

- Location: Farmer & Frenchman Winery
- The Experience: Located just outside of town, this vineyard offers excellent local wines and a farm-to-table dining menu. Before dinner, take a stroll through their kitchen garden where you can spot the resident ducks, geese, and chickens.
- Scenery Tip: Arrive just before sunset to enjoy the panoramic vineyard views during golden hour, making it the perfect spot for photography.
Saturday: Wetlands, Wildlife, & Scenic Overlooks
8:00 AM – Morning Birdwatching at the Audubon Wetlands

6:30 PM – Dinner & Live Music Downtown
- Dinner: Downtown Henderson offers many great options. If you would like to listen to live music and have good cocktail options, we recommend Cap & Cork or Homer’s BBQ. If you’re into upscale southern food and a decent bourbon selection, Hometown Roots is your pick. Rookies is the locals’ favorite, and if you go, you must try their Arabian salad with a butter tortilla.
- Evening Entertainment: Check out the local weekend music schedule, summertime is loaded with music festivals and entertainment. If you can plan your getaway around one of these music fests to get the most bang out of your buck.
Sunday: Public Art & Local Shopping
9:30 AM – Riverfront Stroll & Audubon Sculpture Scavenger Hunt

- Activity: Take a morning walk along Henderson’s scenic riverfront. As you explore, participate in the downtown scavenger hunt to locate the detailed bronze bird sculptures modeled after Audubon’s paintings scattered throughout the historic district.
11:30 AM – Downtown Shopping
